Up at 5 am! On the road by 6 am. Not sure if road construction at the entrance of the RV park will delay us.
Today, we are headed to the Kennecott Mill tour in McCarthy, AK. To get to McCarthy, you have to drive 60 miles down a gravel road that was formerly a railroad line. It is estimated the drive could be 2.5 – 3 hrs depending on the condition of the road. Once you get to the end of the road, you cross a foot bridge to catch a shuttle that runs every hour. We did not want to miss our 11:30 tour, so we left early.
On the drive, we see a momma black bear and 2 baby cubs, then another black bear.
We got to the foot bridge early so we walked the .7 miles in to McCarthy. We ate breakfast at The Potato, then walked around McCarty.
After breakfast, we caught the shuttle up to Kennecott Mill, which was 4.5 miles up the road. We wandered around some of the open buildings until our tour.
We hiked up to the back of the mill and entered the top. We ended at the very bottom. LOTS of ladders/stairs to climb down!! Scary!
You could see the Kennicott Glacier nearby.
The toe of the glacier.
